For long, people that have been selling you your toothbrush rug will have been telling you that these are rugs that you can easily put into a washer and then simply take out in order to completely clean away all dirt and dust from the rug. This is certainly true, though at the same time it may not be the most ideal way of cleaning these rugs.
When you put a toothbrush rug into a washer and clean it several things can happen that you do not want happening to your rugs. For one, they can reduce the lifespan of the rug and then drying them is not all that easy. In addition, if the rug had non colorfast fabrics then these will bleed out and spoil the other fabrics/items in the washer.
It may be better to think up alternative solutions that will help you clean your toothbrush rugs in a more effective manner. One solution is to take your rug outside and give it good shaking over. Or you can also hang it out on a line and then beat all the dirt and dust out of the rug.
Yet another solution is to spray your rug with some foaming carpet cleaner which should be done to both sides and you can also attempt vacuuming the rug with a shop vac or even a normal standard vacuum cleaner that is set to rug/carpet and do this on both sides of the rug.
All these solutions are at least as effective as putting the rugs into a washer but they offer better results in the long term as rugs that are not put in a washer tend to last longer and of course you will not have to worry about learning how to dry the rugs properly.
So, if you want to take good care of your rugs including the toothbrush variety, be sure that you give these alternative solutions a chance. The results will certainly be more pleasing than when you wash the rug in a machine.
